INTERVIEW WITH THE WINNER OF THE B’MORE ORGANIZED CONTEST
This month we are talking with the garage makeover winner of NAPO Baltimore’s B’More Organized Contest. Chris received organizing from Sappari Solutions, Arrange Professional Organizing and Home Organizing Made Easy. She also received paper shredding services from The Shred Mill and junk removal from Bumble Junk. Read on to hear more about the transformation Chris’ garage underwent.
Q. What made you decide to enter the B’More Organized Contest?
A. I have been working with Sappari Solutions Professional Organizing since April 2013, but we had not gotten to the garage yet when I heard about the contest. I knew the garage was going to take a long time to organize because we had many, many boxes that had to be gone through, as well as the typical items you find in a garage. I was overwhelmed and frustrated and felt that everything was closing in on me. It was so much trouble to go into the garage to look for things that it was easier to just buy new ones. I also wanted to be able to park my car in the garage and use the garage for what is supposed to be used for.
Q. What hesitations did you have about working with professional organizers?
A. I was very nervous about anyone seeing the inside of my garage. I was afraid the organizers would judge me. I also thought they would throw everything out. It was hard to put the picture online for other people to view but I knew I did not have the time to organize the garage myself.
Q. What did you like best about working with the organizing team?
A. They actually made it fun. We talked and laughed so the time went fast. They did not make me feel embarrassed about all my stuff. They motivated me to do things on my own.
Q. How else have you benefited from our work together?
A. The organizers have kept me motivated to continue paring down on my own. I love having sections for tools & hardware, lawn care, car care, etc. It is so easy to find things. Best of all, I can now park in the garage, something I haven’t been able to do in years. All of this has resulted in me being less stressed and having more time to do other things.
Q. What is the most important thing people should know about working with professional organizers?
A. I think it is important to know that professional organizers respect you and your stuff. They do not come in and start throwing all of your things away. First, they talk with you to see what you want to accomplish and what has been holding you back. You are in charge and with their guidance, they help you set goals that are manageable. They also help you set up systems to maintain your newly organized space.
Q. Is there anything you would like to have been done differently?
A. No, this is a project I would never have accomplished on my own. I’m thrilled and delighted to have my garage functioning as a garage.
