What’s Getting In the Way?

I have found over and over this statement to be true.

Most people know what to do.

Is this true for you as well?  Do you know WHAT to do to ‘get organized’?  Manage your time better?  Declutter?

Stumbling Blocks

What is getting in the way of you taking action on that knowledge?  Here is the list I have heard (and have used myself):

  • I don’t have enough time
  • It’s the way I have always done it
  • I am lazy.
  • I don’t know what to do
  • I am overwhelmed
  • My partner, spouse, children (fill in the blank) make the mess, it’s not me.
  • I can’t afford to
  • I am not good at organizing.
  • I am not good at making decisions.

What is your reasoning?  What is getting in the way of you getting organized?

Organization is about making decisions.  That is the simplest way to define it.  In every action you take you are making a decision, a choice, for one item, task, thought, over another.  The more we make a particular decision, the more habitualized it becomes.

I am sure you have noticed, our brains do not differentiate on the quality of our habits.  We can have habits that serve us well, like brushing our teeth in the morning, and ones that do not, like dropping our clothes on the floor when we undress.  As long as you do it enough, repeatedly and receive a benefit from it, the habit will continue.

Look back at the list above of what is getting in the way. Which obstacles apply to you?  What would you add to the list?

Now, consider if each of those items is a decision point.

“I don’t have enough time.” becomes “I am choosing to spend 5 more minutes on facebook instead of getting the mail from the mailbox”.

“It’s the way I have always done it” becomes “I am choosing to continue to do it this way intead of finding another way that serves me better.”

“I am lazy.” becomes “I am choosing to speak unkind words instead of seeing the beauty in my self.”

How can you ‘re-write’ the story in your mind to expose the decisions you are making and obliterate the obstacles in your path?

I love to hear from you!  What are your obstacles?  How will you rewrite your story?
