Have you ever gotten to the end of a hectic day or a busy month and said to yourself, “I thought I’d be further along by now…”?
You are not alone.
And it could be with your short-term goals or those lifelong goals you set for yourself.
Often, it leaves you thinking:
- What am I doing?
- Wow! I thought I could handle this better.
- I’m not quite sure where this is going.
- What was the point?
I want to invite you to explore what else could be true.
First off, how are you measuring this thought of “not being where you thought you would”? Are you measuring it against the success of others? Are you measuring it based on your bank statement? Are you measuring it based on the engagement you have on social media? Or the number of sales you made last month?
Perhaps you could use a different measure.
What have you learned? How is life different for you now than 6, 12, 18 months ago? Where were you before & where are you now? What new connections do you have? How about ideas? Did you create something? What about the people you have served and THEIR results?
Because there are lots of ways to measure success – and celebrate it.
Let’s also be sure you’re giving yourself credit for doing something incredible in starting your business. It’s hard at times – and it can be scary – but what you did is brave. You took that huge step to start something new that fits with your drivers and your beliefs – and it is to be commended.
And yes, as cliché as it may sound, Roy T. Bennet said, “Life is about accepting the challenges along the way, choosing to keep moving forward, and savoring the journey.” Have you taken the time to look at where your journey has taken you? Can you see the progress? It may be time to do just that.
Finally, if this questioning of where you think you should be stems from mistakes that you’ve made along the way – embrace them. Know that even when you make mistakes, you’re learning and moving forward. They’re all part of the growth process. And they don’t define you.
So, take a deep breath and put that thought aside because if I were a betting woman, I’d bet you’re right where you’re supposed to be.
